The Fayetteville Ladies Power Lunch has been created to showcase successful women in the Fayetteville, NC area. Successful women-owned businesses are rapidly becoming a major contributor to our country's economic strength. Successful women run the command centers of almost every business in America. Successful women create and maintain homes, requiring multitasking at the Highest level. As the country looks to the future with an economic recovery, women will play a major role in that Future. Now is the time for area women to come together to share ideas, to enjoy new friendships, and possibly create new business relationships.

Each Luncheon at the Fayetteville Ladies Power Lunch, there is a "Heroes Table". Seated at this table will be a woman who provides constant care for a person with a developmental disability. This will be an opportunity for the hero to meet and mingle with other women, to enjoy lunch in a beautiful setting, and to be recognized for the very special work she does everyday!

Team Daniel recognizes a local Non-Profit with a check from the proceeds from the luncheon to show our continued support to their work in the community. Also, at the Luncheon, there is a speaker who will leave you Inspired, Invigorated and Motivated! Did we forget to mention there is a shopping hour - You don't want to miss the shopping Hour!!

Chipping for Charity - Golf Tournament

On Friday, September 16, Team Daniel Foundation teamed up with the Karen Chandler Trust for the First Annual "Chipping for Charity" Golf Tournament! Hosted at the beautiful Gates Four Country Club, the proceeds from the "Chipping for Charity" tournament will help support individuals with developmental disabilities as well as individuals in the Fayetteville community who are facing financial struggles as they battle cancer.

Friendships and Intimate Relationships

In NC, 47.2% of people responding to an NCI 2008 survey reported they are lonely at least some of the time, 24% said they have no one to talk to. (The North Carolina Relationships Initiative)

Annually we complete a Personal Outcome Measures interview with each family. The purpose of this interview is to learn more about the participant and also what support we as an organization can provide to person to make that outcome a reality.

Adults
The current Personal Outcome Measures data indicates that Team Daniel adult participants have low outcomes in regard to intimate relationships and friendships. Intimate relationships take on a different meaning for adults than it does for children and youth. Intimacy and emotions do not discriminate among people; everyone has the desire to be loved and to love, to be intimate, and to have a close friend. Intimacy for adults also involves sexual relationships and desires.

In review of the data, it was found that no goals are written in the PCP for intimacy, there is no time scheduled for it, and agencies don't advocate for intimacy as they do for other areas such as freedom to choose a provider, case manager, and staff. In regards to friendships, in the typical setting, most people do not consider a person they pay for services or co-workers as friends. Generally co-workers are acquaintances people figure out how to deal with for 40 hours a week. Paid staff is people who are compensated for a service and time spent with a person. While there are always exceptions to the rule, sometimes it is implied all people with I/DD who attend Day Supports workshops should automatically consider other participants to be their friends. This should not be the case.

Youth
Life in the community, friendships, and social roles are low outcomes for Team Daniel children and youth. In review of the data many participants have community goals but these may not be the true goal of the participant or aren't full utilized so that the participant can benefit. For example, Billy may have a goal in his plan that says he will go into the community 2x per week. This goal could be accomplished as staff and Billy go to the same park each week in the middle of the same park each week in the middle of the day when no other people are there. Many times the goals in the plan are so basic that they become systematic routines that offer no real enjoyment for the person.

What can be done?
Intimate Relationships: Don't subscribe to the school of thought that the adult yo support is an "external child," as innocent and asexual. Adults with disabilities do have desires and are not asexual beings. It's not your role to protect them by withholding information. Don't ignore their signs of sexual interest or arousal. These are opportunities to educate and discuss the boundaries of sexual relationships:

DON'T stereotype those individuals with disabilities who express their sexual interest as sexually deviant, threatening, or uncontrollable

DO educate the person about sexual health and relationships

DO provide the person with time for privacy

DO provide an environment that the person can make connections, truly meet people, and explore their community

DON'T just go into the community, be part of it (I.E. Social Clubs, Bars, Choir Member)

Friendships

One of the first steps of friendship is developing an understanding of who you are. In the case of children, education about speaking up for themselves, appropriate social behaviors, how to keep them safe, and what to do when they have a problem are critical. Once there is an understanding of self-awareness and appropriate behavior the youth will be able to make decisions about friends. Change the goals and make them more specific to the child or youth's desire. Billy will meet with a friend of choice 1x a month. Billy will seek opportunity to volunteer within his church 1x per week. Goals that show more choice rather than designated places may assist in helping individuals feel more a part of the community, have a social role, and interact with friends.

Education for families and support staff about how to support healthy sexuality and relationship development are also critical. Human Services Research Institute is offering FREE Widening the Circle teleconference/webinar discussions about supporting people with disabilities in health relationships. Each event will feature a 45-minute panel discussion followed by an interactive 45-minute question and answer (Q&A) session, during which panelists will answer your questions.

Tuesday, September 13th from 6:00 to 7:30pm

Self-advocates discuss issues they experience regarding relationships and what they are doing individually and together address them. Panelists include representatives from three self-advocacy groups in Asheville, Raleigh, and Monroe who have been working with Monica Foster as part of the North Carolina Relationships Project. Monica Foster and Katherine McLaughlin, Widening the Circle workshop instructors, will co-facilitate this call.

Tuesday, September 27th from 6:00 to 7:30 pm

Parents, self-advocates, and an expert on guardianship discuss the natural struggle between people with concerns for health and safety and individuals wanting to control their own lives. Panelists included parents, a self-advocate, and a North Carolina expert on guardianship.

Tuesday, October 13th from 3:30 to 5:00pm

Staff from a provider agency in Charlotte, a family receiving services, and other discuss the challenges and successes of supporting people with disabilities (and being supported) to develop a range of relationships with people other than family and staff.

Families of loved ones with developmental disabilities in the Elizabeth City area are invited to attend Team Daniel Foundation's Snack-n-Chat session on Thursday, January 27th from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at the Pasquotank-Camden Library.

Team Daniel Foundation invites all families who have loved ones with developmental disabilities to attend the Snack-n-Chat so they can learn about funding and assistance that may be available to them, and how to get these funds.

Special Olympics Florida has teamed with Cocoa Beach, Florida’s iconic surf shop Ron Jon to give eight Special Olympic swimmers their chance to ride the waves….and who knows what this could lead to? Eight lucky Special Olympics athletes, ages 18-43, took to their foam-core surf boards and rode the waves. According to the Ron Jon Surf School owner and former pro surfer, Craig Carroll, 80% of the surfers were riding within the first 20 minutes! Look to see this event as an official Special Olympics sport in the future!

The Arc of North Carolina Annual Conference- Will You Be There?

That will be the question on everyone’s mind for The Arc of North Carolina’s Annual Conference. This year’s conference will take place August 20-21 at the Wilmington Hilton Riverside in Wilmington, NC.

The Arc believes that all people with developmental disabilities belong in our communities as full participants. Join advocates and people with disabilities from across the state to take a closer look at strategies that will help The Arc’s message to be heard, loud and clear, by the community. Do You Have a Bright Idea?

People always say, “Two heads are better than one!” and the North Carolina Consumer Advocacy, Networking, and Support Organization truly believes this and are seeking the minds of people with mental illness, a substance abuse problem or developmental disability for their upcoming Bright Ideas Forum.

The Bright Ideas Forum will take place in Concord, North Carolina June 17th and 18th from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. This forum is geared towards consumers themselves, not towards family members and other support providers. The purpose of this forum is to assemble a strong consumer voice here in the state of North Carolina, especially during this time of transition and change.

Mr. Rogers from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration will be sharing his years of experience with attendees along with a web-based seminar on systems advocacy for consumers. The forum will also focus on the following:

Mutual support and idea exchange.

Information about consumer-developed and staffed services.

Strategies for making consumer input absolutely necessary within discussions about services.

Ideas for improving outreach and engagement among people with mental illness, substance abuse issues or developmental disabilities state-wide so a strong collective consumer voice can be developed.

Well you’re in luck because ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is coming to the Asheville area and is currently searching for a deserving family in the Asheville area that is in need of a new place to call home.

So how does a family qualify for a home makeover?

It’s simple- A family must own their own single family home and be able to show producers how a makeover will make a huge difference in their lives.

What does it take to be picked for an Extreme Makeover?

The Producers at Extreme Makeover are looking for deserving families and deserving people . In their words, “people who have amazing strength of character and who put their own needs aside to help others. Whether it’s a mom, a soldier, a teacher, or a fireman, we think a deserving family, are families who inspire those around them. In addition, the producers are looking for families whose houses need major alterations or repair- homes that present serious problems for the family and affect the family's quality of life.”

Real People, Real Jobs

The Real People, Real Jobs website was created for this very reason! The Real People, Real Jobs staff created the website to, “increase awareness of the full range of employment opportunities and support options available and to provide individuals and their support networks with examples that will enable them to think creatively about employment.” The site contains EXCELLENT employment success stories from people with developmental disabilities. Each story follows the person’s success from start to finish and explains what strategies they used along the way. These stories are meant to be read by people with disabilities, their families and employment support professionals. Who Would You Nominate

Do you know someone who has gone above and beyond to be an advocate for people with developmental disabilities?

The North Carolina Council of Developmental Disabilities is seeking nominations for its 2010 Hefner Award. The Hefner Award is presented annually to an outstanding North Carolinian who exemplified leadership and achievement in promoting a great quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Hefner Award is in honor of Jack B. Hefner, who served on the NCCDD for 22 years and is the highest honor given by NCCDD to those who have sought to better the lives of people with developmental disabilities.

Holly Riddle, the Council’s Executive Director, had this to say about Jack Hefner and the purpose of the award, “The commitment of ‘Big Jack’ to do whatever it took to enhance the lives of North Carolinians with disabilities inspired a generation of passionate advocates to strive for full inclusion. This award is dedicated to keeping his legacy alive and honoring the families and self-advocates who've followed in his footsteps.”

If you know someone who strives everyday to better the lives of people with developmental disabilities now is the time to honor them! Their wonderful work should not go unrecognized.

Team Daniel is on The List (under North Carolina), now it’s time for you to take action and get businesses and organizations in your community to adopt the Proclamation of Recommitment!

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which protects people with disabilities from discrimination, was signed into law on July 26, 1990 by President H.W. Bush. Now Disability Rights North Carolina is asking businesses, organizations and local governments to adopt a Proclamation of Recommitment to the mission of the ADA.

Disability Rights North Carolina’s goal is to get 500 signatures by July 26, 2010. Pass the link along to businesses and organizations in your area! The National ADA Symposium is heading up a nationwide effort to get 2,010 organizations, businesses and governments to adopt the Proclamation of Recommitment as an affirmation of the mission of the ADA. All organizations, businesses and governments that adopt the Proclamation of Recommitment will be posted on their website, http://www.2010anniversary.org/. The National ADA Symposium will hold its annual conference on June 20-23 in Denver, Colorado.

Those who have signed the Proclamation so far include the state of Colorado, City of San Francisco, the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities and the U.S. Business Leadership Network.

Families that have loved ones with disabilities will love this! A new 25 acre theme park just opened on April 10, 2010, and it’s no ordinary theme park. Morgan’s Wonderland, located in San Antonio, Texas, is the world’s first ultra accessible family fun park that was designed with people with disabilities in mind. The theme park features an inclusive environment and all the attractions are accessible. Some of the attractions and amenities at the park include:

Morgan’s Wonderland also has several features to ensure your family’s safety and comfort. There is a secure exit and entry. The park also provides Radio Frequency Identification wristbands and monitors and video surveillance so you know where family members are at all times. Almost every attraction in the park is shaded and there are accessible water fountains. There are also water misters at most of the facilities.

To visit the park you must make a reservation. Admission to Morgan’s Wonderland is free for people with disabilities. Caregivers are charged an admission fee of $5 and all other guests must pay an admission fee of $15. There is no admission cost for children under the age of 3.

Community Check Up!

Come out to the Fort Sill National Bank on Saturday, May 1, 2010 for their Community Check Up Block Party! This fun-filled event will feature child identification kits, a bicycle rodeo, various children’s activities, a financial check up, an oil check and various health check ups. Information from the Team Daniel Foundation will also be there! This would be a great opportunity to bring the whole family out and enjoy these free services while they are available.

Children will enjoy the bouncy ball house, face painting and the Fayetteville Fire Department will be there with Sparky the Fire Dog!

There will be refreshments, door prizes and much more!

What about people who don't have jobs or are unhappy with the job they have?
What do job experts say?
What can be done to help more self-advocates find work?
What about volunteering in their community or developing a special skill like being an artist or actor?
What can self-advocates do on their own or together to change things?

Each teleconference will include a 60 minute panel discussion, followed by a 30 minute question and answer session. These teleconferences will be taking place on the following days at 3 PM Eastern Time.

Are You Going to the Forum?

Currently, the only local management entity (LME) in the state of North Carolina that operates under the “managed care” waiver is Piedmont Behavioral Health (Cabarrus, Davidson, Rowan, Stanly and Union counties), but that soon could be changing. The state of North Carolina is pushing for all LMEs in the state to switch to the same type of “managed care” waiver program which could mean drastic changes for all of those with disabilities and their caregivers. The following are noted by The Arc of North Carolina as significant changes that could occur:

Flexibility of LME to determine rates and service definitions
Ability to ration service dollars to most critical services
Ability to limit provider network and other managed care benefits
Reduction in provider choice
Some protections associated with the Medicaid program could be reduced
The local nature of the service system could be lost
It is anticipated that the larger expansion of this model (statewide) will be accomplished by combining LMEs, not necessarily geographically connected

The Arc of North Carolina has announced that they will be holding a series of public forums to discuss “managed care” waivers and the impact they could have on all of us. These forums will address questions such as “What are managed care waivers?” and “How do they work?” so that all who will be affected will have a better understanding of the intention of “managed care” waivers. The following are the list of dates that these forums will take place on along with the location.

Disability Listening Tour

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy has announced that they are holding a series of “Listening Sessions” in a Disability Listening Tour in several different states throughout the country. These “Listening Sessions” are an opportunity for individuals with disabilities, their caregivers, employers, and service providers to speak their minds and let the Federal government know how they feel about disability employment. They are actively seeking these people to give their input to Federal officials about what works to increase employment among the disabled and give their ideas for more effective way to employ those with disabilities.

The U.S Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy is working with the following agencies and department to produce the most effective results from these “Listening Sessions.”

· U.S. Social Security Administration
· U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
· U.S. Department of Education
· DOL Employment Training Administration
· DOL Veterans’ Employment and Training Services
· DOL Women’s Bureau
· U.S. Office of Personnel Management
· Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs

The session that is open to residents of North Carolina will take place on February 24, 2010, in Atlanta, GA. Registration is required ahead of time.

MICROENTERPRISE: Enabling Fulfillment. One Person at a Time

The folks at The Power of a Dream have presented people with disabilities and those affiliated with them an excellent opportunity to build a career on their own terms. Micro-Enterprise is a business with less than five workers, start-up capital under $35,000, and structured legally as a sole-proprietorship, partnership, corporation, or limited liability company. With such a high unemployment rate among those with disabilities, starting a micro-enterprise is an excellent way to build a career while doing something that you are interested in and passionate about.
The Power of a Dream has set up the following dates for seminars at the O'Daniel Center, 801 Gilbert Street in Durham at 10 AM- 11:30 AM. These seminars are on the exploration, creation, and realization of Micro-Enterprise.

A New Kind of Listening

Follow the story of the Community Inclusive Theatre Group in the wonderful documentary, A New Kind of Listening. This hour long documentary follows the newly formed group in 2005 for their year long preparation of their theatrical performance. The Community Inclusive Theatre Group brought together a great mix of creative people, some with disabilities, and gave them the opportunity to express themselves as writers, dancers, and actors. The documentary follows the life of Chris Mueller-Medlicott, the co-director of the Community Inclusive Theatre Group, who finally finds his voice even though he is not able to speak. Members of the group who were also not able to speak used facilitated communication and mobile keyboards to contribute creatively to the production. The end result is their performance of “The Song that Greens the Earth.”

A New Kind of Listening has been shown all over the world! Not only has it won rave reviews here in the North Carolina area, the documentary has had showings in Munich, Germany and Ashland University. The ARC of North Carolina Needs Your Help!

Recent cuts in funding for mental health, developmental disabilities and substance abuse services in North Carolina have affected so many people. People are facing additional challenges because they can no longer get the things they need to maintain a happy, healthy lifestyle. I doubt, however, that those making these budget cuts truly understand how life changing their decision to cut the budget can be.

The ARC of North Carolina has decided to take action. Their goal is to get 1,000 stories collected about how the recent budget cuts have affected individuals and families who use MHDDSA services, providers of MHDDSA services, and employees of MHDDSA agencies. Your story is important, and it’s about time that the Governor, members of the General Assembly, the Department of Health and Human Services, and LME Directors hear how their decision have affected the people they serve.

To share your story, please follow these guidelines from the ARC of North Carolina to submit your survey.

For Individuals and family members of people with disabilities who have lost some or all of their services within the MHDDSA system (includes residential and vocational). For people without Internet access or who may need assistance, advocates/staff can interview them over the phone while they complete the survey on-line for them. If the individual fears losing services but hasn't yet, fill out the survey now and then again if/when the person does lose some or all of their services.

Jingle Bell Jog

This weekend Team Daniel staff members are participating in the 31st Annual 7th Group Association Jingle Bell Jog 10k run/ 5k walk! The 7th Group Association holds this event every year to kick off the Holiday Season and to raise money for their organization. The goal of the 7th Group Association, which is a non-profit all volunteer group, is to support families of the 7th Special Forces Group, especially the families of fallen warriors.
This year’s event will take place in Downtown Fayetteville at the Medical Arts Center on Robeson Street. Registration will take place the day of the event starting at 6:30 in the morning, but you can also register online and by mail ahead of time. The registration fee is $25 which includes a long sleeve t-shirt for the event. The run/walk will start at 8:30 am on December 5th and everyone is invited to attend. In addition to the run/walk, the Golden Knights will jump that day around 8 am to kick off the event. The Haven will also be at the event with dogs and cats that are up for adoption. This year there are over $2,000 worth of prizes and raffle items to win!
If you are unable to participate in the run/walk but still wish to help out, the 7th Group Association is looking for volunteers to help with things such as registration, water stations, and route directions. It is that time of year again! Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) Winter Games are about to begin. The Winter games include ice skating and alpine skiing, the SONC Basketball and Cheerleading Tournament, and of course the SONC Summer Games. The SONC is also having a Bowling Tournament on December 6, 2009. The event will be taking place in Newton and Raleigh for the Western and Eastern tournaments. Over 400 athletes are anticipated to attend! There will also be family members, coaches, and volunteers present to make sure the tournament is a success. All of the volunteer spots for this event have been filled. The Buddy Club

Attention families in the Asheville area!! Have you heard about the Buddy Club for children with developmental disabilities? This event is aimed at children with developmental disabilities who have no services or who have had recent cuts in services. The Buddy Club is designed to give parents the night off while their child/children play with their individual buddy for the night.
Trained staff will be on hand to make sure this event runs smoothly. The space for this program is very limited so be sure to stop by F.I.R.S.T to pick up your application. The deadline to have the application returned is November 10, 2009, which is quickly approaching! The actual event will be held on November 13 from 6-8 p.m. at the West Asheville Community Center. F.I.R.S.T. is hoping to make this a monthly event, but they are in need of community groups and organizations to be the Buddy part of the Buddy Club.

Team Daniel is a Sponsor of the Karen Chandler Beach Music Festival

On October 11, 2009, the Karen Chandler Trust held its 6th Annual Beach Music Festival and Team Daniel, LLC was proud to be one of the sponsors of the event! The event took place at the Sol Rose Amphitheatre at Campbellton Landing on the Cape Fear River. We had several members of the Team Daniel staff who participated in the event and they had a wonderful time spending their day raising money for those diagnosed with cancer in our area.

The Karen Chandler Trust has been doing great things for those with cancer in the Cumberland County area for many years now. The KCT started when Karen Chandler, a local musician, was diagnosed with breast cancer. A group of local musicians held a benefit to aid Karen and her family with the financial burdens she was facing because of her illness. Karen, a single parent of two, lost her battle with breast cancer on August 4, 1999, but her friends and family wanted to continue their giving to those in need. They decided to establish the Karen Chandler Trust as a formal North Carolina Non-profit Corporation. The KTC has continued to grow and aid those in need for several years now. Their first beach benefit was held in September of 2004 and has been quite successful every year. To date, the Karen Chandler Trust has raised and distributed $150,000 to cancer patients in the Cumberland County area. The money given helps patients with expenses such as food, shelter, transportation, and medical treatments.

The Benefits of Focus Groups

Team Daniel serves individuals with developmentally disabilities across the state of North Carolina. The best way to collect community information is to go visit the community and speak with its members in a facilitated group discussion. You learn a lot through these discussions about the unique needs of the community. For instance, we have found that families we serve in the Charlotte and Lenoir area, have a difficult time finding local dentists who specialize in serving people with developmental disabilities. Many of these families travel 30 miles or more to have their child seen by a specialty dentist who will meet the needs of their child or loved one.

In the most recent issue of EMPOWERED (Fall 2009), we featured an article on Special Care Dentistry. Access Dental is a non-profit mobile dentistry unit that provides dental services to older adults in long-term care settings and individuals with developmental disabilities. They serve several counties within central North Carolina and we need more services like this throughout our state. Communities should come together so that we have enough mobile units to cover all 100 of North Carolina's counties!

Each focus group gives those in attendance a chance to discuss specific needs of the community and share available resources that families may not know exist. These meetings are rich with dialogue and those who come, share their own knowledge and/or learn something they didn't know before.

Where We've Been in 2009

This year we began our focus group tour in Fayetteville, NC. We then visited Lumberton, Raleigh, Charlotte and Lenoir. Our final stop this year will be in Asheville, NC. In 2010, we plan to start the tour all over again.

Up, Up and Away!

This week I learned of an organization that could fulfill my childhood fantasy of riding in a hot air balloon. Serena's Song, led by Gary Waldman, is the world's first wheelchair-accessible hot air balloon ride.

Serena’s song is named after Waldman’s daughter who was born with Cerebral Palsy. As a young girl Serena fell in love with hot air balloon rides….and the idea for Serena’s song was born. Since 1991, Waldman has taken over 20,000 families into the skies for the ride of their lives.

Unfortunately, if you are reading this and hearing of Serena’s Song for the first time, you have missed Waldman’s North Carolina dates for this year. I hope you will forgive me; I couldn’t miss this opportunity to share this information and give you a heads up for next year!

This weekend Team Daniel pressed onward with our statewide road trips and burned rubber all the way to Charlotte, North Carolina. Our mission was to meet our families in the Charlotte/Gastonia area, but boy were we surprised! An extra special thanks goes out to everyone that traveled from the Triangle and Asheville. We hope you had as wonderful time as we did.

I know that social networking is the "in" thing to do...but we at Team Daniel want to sit and chat with you. We will be at the Mountain Island Library in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday, August 1st from 1:30pm-3:30pm.

The main topic of discussion will be future improvements for individuals with developmental disabilities, but if you have any other questions...we probably have an answer. This meeting would also be a great chance to talk about any article ideas for EMPOWERED! Plus we will have copies of "They Created Us" for sale.

The "Going's On", In Cumberland County

Bright and early this morning it occured to me that I haven't announced any wonderful events for our "blog friends" down the street. Next Friday, July 24th is Fourth Friday in Downtown Fayetteville.

Now, you may ask why I'm posting this so far in advance. My answer to that is, this event is awesome! Now that we have all gotten into the summer groove, this event is the perfect way to take advantage of these picture perfect summer nights. From 7pm-9pm you, ME and hundreds more of your favorite Fayetteville residents will be walking the streets to live music, art exhibitions and tons of yummy food vendors.

Here's what the Fayetteville Downtown Alliance says about "Fourth Friday's":

Fourth Friday is like an old fashioned “Gallery Crawl.” Folks of all ages get a taste of Fayetteville's art and entertainment while enjoying the small galleries, bookstores, bistros and shops with unique items for shoppers. Even the streets become the stage for roaming magicians, puppet shows and drum circles. It’s safe, it's fun and did we mention it's free!

It's Amazing What Happens When We All Work Together

If you live in or near the Charlotte area there is a wonderful non-profit organization that helps families with children on the Autism Spectrum. The best thing about the Autism Foundation of the Carolinas is that the whole organization is run by parents. All founding and governing board members have children on the Autism Spectrum.

The Autism Foundation of the Carolinas (AFC) is the effort of individuals with an interest in assisting families in the Charlotte area who have children on the autism spectrum or have some type of related developmental/neurological impairment. It is the desire of AFC to help families affected find solutions and provide funding for them. In addition, AFC is dedicated to developing programs to enhance and improve their lives. Every day I do more research and uncover more local gems, the "Teens to Adulthood" support group hosted by the ARC of Wake County is no exception. If you check their website they do not meet in the summer months, however they are working on their upcoming September 2009-May 2010 schedule and Steve Strom, the Executive Director with the ARC of Wake County assures me the schedule will not disappoint.

This support group covers the questions most parents will have when the children start to transition into adulthood. And with most organizations, products and services...the ideas stemmed from a need and I've found the story.

HISTORY

When Kathy Honeyman moved to Raleigh five years ago, she went about identifying community resources for her teenage daughter, Rebecca. Having been assisted in many ways by The Arc of Monmouth County in New Jersey, she decided to contact The Arc of Wake County. There she was advised to start planning for her daughter’s future. Kathy began to realize that as children with disabilities become teenagers and young adults, a new set of issues emerges in every area of development and lifestyle. Social, emotional, safety, recreational, financial, housing, vocational and advocacy concerns needed to be addressed. Eventually, the idea for monthly meetings, where parents and professionals could come together to talk about some of these transitions, came to light. “Teen to Adulthood” was born.

With the help of other parents and area professionals the meetings started to take shape. Today, Teen to Adulthood boasts over 400 people on its mailing list. The group has covered issues including SSI, Vocational Rehabilitation, CAP services and registering our teens/young adults to vote in upcoming elections. The program is free of charge and offers a casual, friendly and supportive atmosphere for networking with other parents and professionals, while learning valuable information from community providers and experts in their areas.

I am very excited to learn more about this support group and the families they help educate thoughtout the state.

Thanks to our newest team member(thanks Teresa) I have been made aware of my new favorite blog http://www.jaylenschallenge.org/ . Jaylen, an 8 year old with Tourette Syndrome, writes almost daily on his blog about his everyday life, family and most importantly how it's wrong to bully others.

His blogging has empowered children and their parents to stand up against bullying in their communities. Recently, Jaylen was featured on CNN. Here is a link to the video (provided by their local news channel) : http://bit.ly/v2j6b

Jaylen lets us into his daily life through his words and video. Since the response has been so overwhelming every now and then we hear from his parents.

We knew our local station ran the story but had no idea it would go national. Jaylen has received hundreds of emails from you and your children. It is absolutely amazing! It's wonderful to see that so many people stand behind our little guy. It also lets us know just how global and what a huge problem bullying is ~ especially for disabled children."

Every day his witty one-liners make their way to my browser, and thank goodness.

Busy Schedule Getting In the Way? Online Support Groups May Help

While browsing some of our favorite websites, I have found a few area organizations that have online support groups for family members and friends. Here you post questions, read past topics and get more connected to your community.

The Wake County Autism Society has two online groups for parents of children and teenagers with Asperberg's Syndrome. They are both "parent support networks" that share information and resources concerning young children, teens and young adults with HFA/AS who are in high school, college or have recently begun employment.

Straight From the House's Mouth

This morning, we were notifed of House bill 687 commonly known as " Tax Credit for Children With Disabilities." This bill is scheduled to be heard by the House on Tuesday, June 23rd at 11am in room 643 of the Legislative Office Building.

This is what they say:

"House Bill 687 creates a new tax credit for parents of children with special needs who choose to educate those children in a nonpublic school (including home schools) or in a public school at which they must pay tuition. The credit amount is set at $3,000 per semester, up to two semesters per year (a maximum of $6,000 for a full academic or taxable year). The credit is refundable and is capped at the associated tuition cost. Initial eligibility depends on spending a year in public school. "

This information is available to the public, so please contact your Representatives with any questions.

Thanks to WRAL, we have more news on the proposed budget. The house plans to restore some of the money previously taken away from mental health.

CAP MR/DD Updates (6/1/2009)

Here is the highlight of the Update to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services for participants and families utilizaing CAP MR/DD.

For families that receive oral nutritional supplements billed through Medicaid, in addition to the Local Management Enitities having specific B codes that need to be listed, it is noted that "Prior approval is not required for payment; however an order is required from a
physician, physician’s assistant, or nurse practitioner."

New Full Time QP for Team Daniel

Team Daniel is adding a Full-Time Qualified Personnel (QP) for many of our western participants as of July 1st!

For our families who love their current QP in that region, there is no need to worry as those QPs will remain with Team Daniel to conduct training and fill in as needed. Team Daniel understands that change is not always the easiest pill to swallow. However, as Team Daniel grows we want to ensure constant and consistent attention is given to our participants and their family members. The addition of a full-time QP to this area of North Carolina will assist with this goal.

Denise, the CEO for Team Daniel, and Robin, the QP Director, have spent time reviewing applications and interviewing the candidates in person to choose the person who is the most qualified and who exemplifies the values of Team Daniel.

In addition to CAP MR/DD Funds the proposed budget also effects other programs such as: the Partnership for Children(#10), Local Management Entities, Special Olypics (#72), Child Support Offices (#93), Vocational Rehab (#109-113).

In a message from the Arc of North Carolina's Executive Director, Dave Richard, here are a few of the worst cuts:
Reducing the budget for state-funded services by over $150,000,000
Cuts all Medicaid service rates by 4% causing salary reductions and layoffs
Cuts Medicaid Personal Care Services by over $50,000,000...reducing the services by over half. This is the only direct service other than case management that is a Medicaid entitlement for people with developmental disabilities
Eliminates continuation increases in Medicaid of over $500,000,000. This cut means serious reductions because any increases in CAP plans implemented during the last fiscal year will be eliminated
Cuts case management services by over $50,000,000 by "consolidation"
Eliminates the Medicaid service called Community Support which is the one Medicaid service that is designed to support people with mental illness in the community.

CAP Services - What are they?

CAP is an acronym used for the North Carolina waiver program, Community Alternative Program.

"CAP C" provides cost-effective home care for medically fragile children (through age 18) who would otherwise require long-term hospital care or nursing facility care.

"CAP DA" provides a package of services to allow adults (age 18 and older) who qualify for nursing facility care to remain in their private residences.

"CAP MR/DD" consists of two waivers: the Supports Waiver and the Comprehensive Waiver. Both waivers provide community services to individuals with autism, developmental disabilities, or intellectual disabilities/mental retardation who live in their own home or reside with their family.

In addition to the CAP waivers, a special Federal program is available to all North Carolina children with special needs that have a Medicaid card. EPSDT (Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis & Treatment) is the Federal program that is available to children under the age of 21 that have a Medicaid card and require medically necessary services and supports. These medically necessary services and supports include, but are not limited to:

Personal Care Services
Home Health Services
Hospice Care
Physical Therapy and related services

What does the Team Daniel Foundation do?

The Team Daniel Foundation ran by John and Denise Mercado was established as a non-profit organization in September 2008.

The Team Daniel Foundation produces a quarterly publication, EMPOWERED. In each issue there is information about Medicaid Waivers, community activities that promote inclusion for people with disabilities, and so much more!

Denise Mercado is the author of They Created Us. The book details her family's journey through the disability world that begins with her second son's encounter with Hflu meningitis at six months of age. Through this journey, you will learn the complexities of the bureaucracy along with strategies to maneuver through a sometimes unresponsive system. Special Education, Medicaid Waivers, EPSDT, and Independent Case Management are all part of a family's world when their child experiences disabilities. This family's journey uncovers injustices and allows the opportunity for basic rights to be realized throughout systems that were put in place to help children with disabilities.

Through the sales of both of these publications the ability to support Respite services has become a reality. The Team Daniel Foundation accepts applications for Respite funds from individuals in North Carolina who do not receive services or are on the waiting list for CAP services.
